Largy Burn drops off a low cliff inside a roofless sea cave, sending the water straight into Donegal Bay — a spot on the Slieve League peninsula that is only reachable on foot and only around low tide.
Things to Do
The coastal scramble
Through the gate, a farm track runs roughly 300-350 m down to the coast. From there there is no path: you pick your way over jagged, seaweed-slicked rocks for another 15-20 minutes. Sturdy boots with deep grip are essential.
Largy Viewpoint
The car park doubles as a coastal viewpoint over Donegal Bay, and locals rate it as one of Donegal's best sunset spots. A coffee pod is usually parked here.
Fossil hunting
The rocks along this shore are notably rich in fossils, a bonus for anyone interested in the area's geology.
The rest of the peninsula
The waterfall sits a 25-minute drive from the Slieve League cliffs. Other easy add-ons are Silver Strand beach, Glengesh Pass and the Glencolmcille Folk Village.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: No set hours: the cave is entirely submerged at high tide, so the waterfall can only be reached in a low-tide window. Plan to arrive two to three hours before low tide, and check a Killybegs tide forecast first.
- Parking: Free parking at Largy Viewing Point on the R263, but it is extremely limited. If the car park is full, leave and come back another time — do not park on the road verges.
- Food: A coffee pod is usually parked at the Largy Viewing Point. Otherwise food is a drive away; The Rusty Mackerel pub in Teelin is a popular post-walk stop.
