A small roadside pull-off on the R263 west of Killybegs, Largy Viewpoint opens onto sweeping Donegal Bay views — and hides a steep, low-tide scramble to a sea cave and waterfall below.
When the tide is out you can reach a cave by the sea with a waterfall beyond it, especially impressive after heavy rain. Access is only at low tide and the rocks are very slippery — many visitors have broken bones here. Only attempt it if you can read tide tables, and never get cut off.
Pull in on the R263 about 5 km west of Killybegs for sweeping views over Donegal Bay. On a clear day you can see the four counties of Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim.
Dolphins are frequently seen playing in the bay below Largy, and from November to February flocks of wild geese fly in from Iceland to winter in the field below the viewpoint.
This is a known sunset spot: the best displays run from October to February, when the bay is bathed in orange and pink.
A short path leads down from the viewpoint towards the coast. It is rough going, and the road-side section near the parking has no footpath, so take care with traffic.
