A quiet, unspoiled strand on the remote St John's Point peninsula in southwest Donegal, with crystal-clear water, golden sand and wide views across Donegal Bay. It stays near-empty even in summer, but has no facilities, shops or lifeguards, so come self-sufficient.
On calm summer days the water is clear and relatively calm, making it popular for swimming. The rocky shoreline and clean water also make it one of Donegal's best snorkelling spots, with marine life close to shore. There are no lifeguards, so swim with care.
Rocky outcrops and grassy dunes frame the beach. Look out over Donegal Bay to Benbulben in County Sligo and the Slieve League cliffs; the light is at its best around sunrise and sunset.
Low tide opens up rockpools and clean shoreline to poke around, an easy way to keep children busy on a calm day.
At the tip of the peninsula St John's Point lighthouse gives an impressive panorama over Donegal Bay. The drive out passes the Killaghtee Cross and the remains of McSwyne's Castle.
Pack a picnic and take all rubbish home: there are no facilities, shops or cafes anywhere on the point.
