A sheltered sand cove and a working 1831 granite lighthouse at the tip of one of Ireland's longest peninsulas, jutting into Donegal Bay on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Coral Beach is a sheltered little cove on the southern side of the headland with soft, almost pink sand and very clear water. It is a relaxed, uncrowded spot for strolling, paddling and picnicking, and free-roaming cattle sometimes wander the strand.
A narrow road runs the length of the peninsula to St John's Point Lighthouse, a white 14-metre granite tower first lit in 1831. The light is automated and not open to visitors, but you can drive or walk right up to it; the beach is about 1.5 km away. Near the tower are the wartime EIRE 70 sign and a World War II lookout post.
From the tip the views sweep from Donegal Town and the Bluestack Mountains round to Sligo, Mayo and the Slieve League coast. The point is a fine place for a sunset; the long light over the bay is the peninsula's classic view.
The clear, sheltered waters at Coral Beach are popular for swimming, snorkelling, diving and rock fishing, and the cove is regarded as safe for bathing. It is a good spot for children.
The drive out from Dunkineely passes the ruined 15th-century McSwyne's Castle and the Killaghtee Cross, an early Christian slab cross — easy stops before you reach the beach.
