Ireland's longest seafront boardwalk — a 1.9km accessible coastal stroll linking three Blue Flag beaches, with the sea on one side and Ballyvergan Marsh on the other.
The 2-metre-wide Ekki hardwood boardwalk runs 1.9km from Front Strand Beach through Claycastle to Redbarn Beach. Flat and smooth, it takes about 25–30 minutes at a gentle pace — or longer if you stop at the many benches to soak up the sea views.
The boardwalk connects Front Strand, Claycastle, and Redbarn — all Blue Flag beaches with lifeguards during the summer bathing season (June–August). Swim, paddle, or simply spread a towel. Each beach has its own character; Redbarn is the wildest, Front Strand the most sheltered.
The boardwalk runs along the seaward edge of Ballyvergan Marsh, Cork's largest coastal marsh and a protected habitat for migratory birds. Look for herons, curlews, oystercatchers, and little egrets. A bird hide is located nearby for serious birders.
Boardwalk Café serves locally roasted specialty coffee near the route. At the Redbarn end, the Quality Hotel has a coffee station open to walkers. Pop-up coffee stalls also appear along the boardwalk, especially in warmer months.
Looking south across Youghal Harbour you'll see Capel Island, a nature reserve with an unfinished lighthouse tower. The island is home to a herd of goats and seabirds — bring binoculars for a closer look.
