A 1777 clock-tower-turned-gaol straddling Youghal's main street, where costumed storytellers bring 700 years of history to life across four floors — capped by panoramic rooftop views over Youghal Bay.
The only way inside: a 50-minute guided tour led by costumed storytellers in 'Time Costume'. Journey through the tower's life stages — medieval market trade, grim gaol, civic clock tower, and family home — with audio-visual displays, artefacts, and sensory surprises (smell the merchants' spices, touch the silks). Tours depart on the hour, 11am to 4pm.
The tower's darkest chapter: for decades the upper floors held prisoners in cramped, harsh conditions directly above the busiest street in town. See the cold cells, read the gaoler's written accounts, and understand how public punishment was deliberately visible — a message to everyone passing below.
See the clock workings up close and hear it strike. Learn how the tower regulated daily life — markets, working hours, church — long before personal watches were common. The McGrath family wound this clock by hand for generations until the dials were electrified in the 1950s.
The tower's most personal chapter: John McGrath and his family were the last residents here, living in the clock gate from 1939–1959. A short video features John himself recounting daily life — its highs and lows — with subtitles in French, German, and Spanish.
Climb to the 5th-floor viewing platform, 24 metres up, for a magnificent panorama: Youghal Bay, the lighthouse, the rooftops of the medieval town, and on clear days across the water towards County Waterford.
The Clock Gate is the natural starting point for exploring Youghal's rich heritage. From here, walk to St Mary's Collegiate Church (tours also bookable), the 13th-century Town Walls, Tynte's Castle, Myrtle Grove, and the seafront. A combined ticket or same-day visit makes an excellent half-day itinerary.
