The Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk is a rugged clifftop trail linking the village of Doolin with the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre and on to Liscannor, passing O'Brien's Tower above some of Ireland's highest sea cliffs.
The trail sets off from Doolin, right beside Doolin Inn, and follows a gravel clifftop path for about 8 km to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, taking roughly 4 hours on foot. The full Doolin–Liscannor route is 20 km and listed at 4–5 hrs. Buses and the shuttle can bring you back to Doolin.
Standing near the highest point of the cliffs, O'Brien's Tower has been the classic viewing point for hundreds of years. On a clear day you can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay and the mountains of Connemara.
The cliffs host major colonies of nesting seabirds and are an EU Special Protection Area for birds. Puffins are best between May and June, while sea pink, orchids and knapweed bloom along the path through spring and summer.
At the end of the walk, the award-winning Visitor Centre, built into the hillside, holds a self-guided exhibition on the Cliffs, the Burren and County Clare, a theatre, cafés, a craft and gift store, and a free audio guide app.
Local guide Pat Sweeney runs the Doolin Cliff Walk, sharing stories along the route, or you can follow the waymarked trail yourself. Wear boots and rain gear and keep back from the edge — the exposed clifftop path carries real danger.
Parts of the trail are closed for safety: as of 1 August 2026 the southern Liscannor–Hags Head section is fully closed, and walkers on the northern Doolin route are advised to turn back at Surfers Path, with no access through to the Visitor Centre.
