A fairy-tale 16th-century round tower house perched on a hill above Doolin, with sweeping Atlantic views — one of only three cylindrical tower houses in the Burren. Privately owned and closed inside, but unforgettable from the road, especially at sunset.
The best shots are from the hill leading up to the castle (tower looms above you) and from the road beside it, where the sandstone tower is framed against the wild Atlantic and the Aran Islands. Late afternoon and sunset light warms the stone beautifully.
In September 1588, a Spanish Armada ship wrecked off the Doolin coast. Around 170 survivors made it ashore — only to be seized and hanged at the castle or on nearby Cnocán an Crochaire (Hangman's Hill) by the High Sheriff of Clare.
Park in Doolin and walk the ~20 minutes uphill from Fisher Street. The road is steep and narrow — good fitness and proper footwear are needed. You'll pass the castle en route to the Doolin Cliff Walk, which starts nearby and follows the coast to the Cliffs of Moher.
Built from warm local sandstone (not the pale Burren limestone), the tower stands out against the landscape. From the road you can pick out the machicolation (defensive dropping-hole) above the doorway and the bawn wall enclosing the grounds.
