A spectacular guided (or self-guided) coastal walk along the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin, led by fifth-generation local farmer Pat Sweeney — one of the most authentic ways to experience Ireland's most famous sea cliffs, far from the crowds.

The Guided Walk with Pat Sweeney

The signature experience: a 4-hour, ~8km guided walk from Fisher Street in Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. Pat Sweeney — a local farmer whose family has worked this land for five generations — leads the way, sharing stories of local history, folklore, geology and rural life. The walk crosses two sections of his own farm en route. Starts 10am, finishes ~2pm with a taxi back to Doolin included. €30 per person, cash only. Not suitable for children under 10.

Self-Guided Walk: Doolin to Surfers Path

Prefer to go solo? The northern section of the trail (Doolin to Surfers Path) is currently open for self-guided walkers. It's roughly 6.6km one-way with some steep sections — allow 1.5–2 hours each way. Note: you must turn back at Surfers Path; the remainder of the coastal trail towards the Visitor Centre is closed for maintenance. Walkers should be cautious near the cliff edge and wear sturdy footwear.

Doonagore Castle

About 500m from the start, the 16th-century Doonagore Castle appears on your left, perched on a raised setting overlooking Doolin Bay. It's one of the most photogenic tower houses in Clare — a perfect early stop for photos before the cliffs begin to rise dramatically ahead.

The Highest Point & O'Brien's Tower

The guided walk culminates near the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher, standing 214m (702 feet) above the Atlantic. On a clear day you can see the Dingle Peninsula and Loop Head to the south, the Aran Islands to the west, and the Twelve Pins of Connemara to the north. O'Brien's Tower, a 19th-century observation point, marks the spot.

Farming Life & Wildlife Encounters

The trail crosses working farmland — you'll likely see Pat's suckler cows and sheep grazing fields with jaw-dropping ocean backdrops. Keep an eye out for seabirds, rare wildflowers, and the Branaunmore sea stack (67m high), a dramatic remnant of coastal erosion that was once part of the mainland cliffs.

Plan Your Visit

Hours: Guided walk departs daily at 10:00 from outside Doolin Inn, Fisher Street, Doolin. Returns approximately 14:00. Self-guided access to the northern section (Doolin–Surfers Path) is open during daylight hours. Walks may be postponed or cancelled in severe weather.
Admission: Guided walk: €30 per person (cash only). Reduced rates for groups.
Parking: Free parking at the back of Doolin Inn for guided walk participants. Additional free parking at the Micho Russell Community Centre (approx. 1.5km walk to Fisher Street start point). No parking at the trailhead itself.
Food: Doolin Inn on Fisher Street serves breakfast before the walk. Fisher Street in Doolin village has several cafés, pubs and restaurants for pre- or post-walk refreshments. The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre has a café.
