A wild, wind-battered pull-in on the R479 clifftop road near Ballyryan, where bare Burren limestone meets the Atlantic with no fences, no queues and no admission gate. Stop on the drive between Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher and you can stand right at the cliff edge.
Pull in on the R479 and look out over the Atlantic. On a clear day the Aran Islands, Connemara and the Clare coast are visible, with the mountains of Kerry on the horizon. This is open, exposed clifftop country — keep well back from the edge, as gusts can come from nowhere.
The area sits on this 15 km (10-mile) walking route, which climbs to 230 m at O'Brien's Tower. Note the 2026 closures: the northern section is officially open from Doolin to Surfers Path only, with no through access to the visitor centre, and walking on the road at Surfers Path is hazardous.
Puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fulmars breed on the grassy cliff ledges from May to August. Kestrels and peregrine falcons hunt overhead, and the rare black chough with its red beak can be seen year-round.
The thin limestone soil flowers from spring: primroses from March, sea pink in May–July, orchids in June–August, and knapweed and heather in late summer. The karst rock itself is part of the spectacle.
The visitor centre and O'Brien's Tower lie a short drive south (open 8am–9pm), with safe paved viewing paths, or head back the other way into Doolin for pubs and restaurants. This free roadside stop works well as a quieter add-on to the paid Experience.
