It starts indoors — a handy first stop before the drive turns to open Atlantic strand — then follows the Atlantic Drive past Keel's 3.5 km of sand, climbs the narrow clifftop road above the sea, and finishes at the Wild Atlantic Way discovery point at Keem Bay. After Dooagh the road narrows to single track, so take it slowly and expect sheep. Summer brings lifeguards and crowds to both beaches; pre-booking the aquarium is advised, and Keem's car parks fill early.

2.Keel Beach
The island's big surf strand
The strand spreads 3.5 km of golden sand beneath the Minaun Cliffs, facing the Atlantic swell — Ireland's most consistent surf. The Blue Flag swimming zone sits at the western end near the village with summer lifeguards; at low tide, firm sand lets you walk the full length to Cathedral Rocks at the cliff base.

3.Keem Beach, Achill
The horseshoe bay at the island's tip
The approach is the reveal: after Dooagh the R319 becomes a single-track cliff-edge road, climbing above the Atlantic before snaking down into a sheltered horseshoe of turquoise water and golden sand. Keem is a Blue Flag beach where the Banshees of Inisherin shot its final beach scenes, and basking sharks cruise the bay in May and June.

4.Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point @Keem Bay
The view that ends the road
A short hop from the beach, this Wild Atlantic Way signature point is where the road finally stops. From the old coastguard watch-house on Moyteoge head, a 1.5 km cliff walk runs towards Achill Head, the most westerly point of Achill, while Croaghaun's sea cliffs rise behind the bay — a last, long view before you turn back.

Where are the Banshees of Inisherin filming locations on Achill?
Keem Bay starred in the Oscar-nominated film — Colm Doherty's cottage stood here (now gone) and the final beach scenes were shot on the sand, though the white building above the beach is the old coastguard station, not the film cottage. When is the best time to drive out to Keem?
