A vast 3.5 km Blue Flag strand on Achill Island, backed by the Minaun Cliffs and facing the Atlantic swell — Ireland's premier watersports beach, with reliable surf, golden sand, and a lively village just steps away.
Keel is one of Ireland's most consistent surf beaches, facing south-west into the Atlantic. Blackfield Watersports and Achill Surf offer lessons and board hire right on the strand. Kite-surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are also hugely popular here, with Pure Magic running kite-surfing sessions on the bay and lake behind the beach.
The designated swimming area is at the western end near Keel village — stick to the flag-marked zone. The water quality is rated Excellent and lifeguards patrol during summer months. The eastern half has strong currents and is not suitable for swimming.
At low tide, the firm sand lets you walk the full 3.5 km to the base of Minaun Cliffs. Here you'll find the Cathedral Rocks — church-shaped sea pillars only accessible at low tide — and the Dookinella Waterfall cascading down the hillside after rain. Keep an eye on tide times; the rocks get cut off at high water.
The exposed coastline and steady westerly winds make Keel one of Ireland's top kite-surfing destinations. Look for Pure Magic's kite-surfing school operating from the lake behind the beach, or watch the pros from the sand.
The quirky 9-hole Achill Island Golf Club sits right behind the dunes — local sheep help keep the fairways trimmed and greens are fenced off from grazing. Short, exposed, and unforgettable.
