About

Mayo's first and only aquarium, where engaging guided tours bring you face-to-face with native sea life, rare lobsters, and tropical species — paired with a history museum that brings Achill's rich past vividly to life.

Things to Do

Guided Aquarium Tour

The standout feature: knowledgeable guides lead small-group tours every 45 minutes through 16 tanks. Meet catsharks, thornback rays, clownfish ('Nemo'), Pacific Blue Tangs ('Dory'), and rare-coloured lobsters — Rusty (orange), Charlie (white), Smurfette, and Sapphire. The centre runs a successful shark breeding programme.

Museum of Achill Life

18 illustrated story boards cover Achill's history: the Coffin Trail, the Spanish Armada, Heinrich Böll, the Kirkintilloch tragedy, Grace O'Malley, and more. Two documentaries screen on-site — one on basking shark fishing (Achill was a global shark-fishing hub in the 1950s) and 'The Achill Prophecy'.

Replica Boley House

Step inside a faithfully recreated traditional stone cottage, modelled on the houses of the nearby Slievemore Deserted Village. It's furnished with period artefacts and farming tools, giving a visceral sense of how Achill islanders lived generations ago.

Robert Henri Portrait Collection

First-edition prints by American artist Robert Henri, who visited Achill in the 1920s and painted local children from Pollagh and Dooagh. The vivid colours and expressions bring these portraits to life — a hidden gem for art lovers.
