A Blue Flag freshwater beach and lakeside park on Lough Derg, combining safe swimming, woodland walks, and water sports just 3 km north of Killaloe.
A designated freshwater bathing area with wooden jetties and pontoons. Lifeguards patrol during summer months. The water is calm and the stony lakebed makes swim shoes useful. Popular with open-water swimmers year-round, and the spot for the annual Christmas Day Charity Swim.
Twomilegate is a trailhead on the Lough Derg Blueway with 160 km of paddling trails. The Ballycuggeran to Annacarriga Loop (3 km) is ideal for beginners. The UL Sport Adventure Centre on site offers equipment hire, lessons, and guided trips — from kayaking to windsurfing and giant SUP boards.
Bring supplies and settle in at one of the picnic tables dotted around the grassy lakeshore. The park is listed among Ireland's best picnic spots, with views across Lough Derg to the Tipperary hills.
Across the road from the lakeshore, Ballycuggeran Woods offers looped walking trails through oak woodlands. The Crag Wood Loop (7.1 km, 2 hours) is rated strenuous with rewarding panoramic views. A gentler 3.5 km footpath links Killaloe to the beach along the R463.
Start from Ballycuggaran Forest car park and follow the East Clare Way up to Moylussa (531 m). The 11 km round trip takes about 3–4 hours, with boardwalk sections near the summit and spectacular views over Lough Derg.
