The trailhead on the lower slopes of Crag Hill above Lough Derg, where the Crag Wood Walk and the climb to County Clare's highest point both begin.
A 7.1 km red-waymarked loop straight from the car park, climbing 250 m on a mix of forest road, forest track and minor road through dense plantation and open hillside. It is graded strenuous and takes about two hours; walk it anti-clockwise for the best views over Lough Derg.
A trail built in 2016 lets walkers continue from this trailhead up to Moylussa, the highest point in County Clare. Expect a longer, rougher outing than the loop itself.
The trailhead also gives access onto the East Clare Way, the long-distance route marked with yellow arrows and the trekking logo, so you can extend your walk beyond the marked loop.
The start is at Rinnaman Point (Two-mile Gate), a spacious lakeside public amenity area on the shores of Lough Derg beside the University of Limerick watersports and adventure centre.
The lively waterside town of Killaloe, hometown of Brian Ború, is about 3 km away with cafés, restaurants and pubs for refreshments after the walk.
