A roofless Napoleonic signal tower on Hag's Head, the southern tip of the Cliffs of Moher — the free, crowd-free viewpoint most coach tours never reach.
A near-square roofless ruin built around 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, on the site of the older promontory fort Mothar that gave the cliffs their name. Two corner bartizans and fireplaces survive, and choughs nest inside in summer.
The tower is about 1 km from Liscannor, 15–20 minutes on foot. Expect uneven ground, loose stone, no barriers and big unguarded drops — proper shoes are essential and small children need close supervision.
Walk around the point for the head-shaped rock profile — the sea-witch Mal of local legend, who chased Cú Chulainn and fell here — and a natural arch carved into the headland.
From the headland the full sweep of cliffs runs north towards O'Brien's Tower. On a clear day you can pick out the Aran Islands, Galway Bay and the Connemara mountains, with Loop Head away to the south.
The light comes from the west, straight onto the cliff faces, turning the rock golden. With no visitor-centre crowds, you will likely have the headland almost to yourself.
