Ireland's most southwesterly point: a former signal station perched on a sea-crag, reached by an arched footbridge suspended 45m above the Atlantic swell. A Wild Atlantic Way signature discovery point with dramatic cliff scenery, maritime history, and year-round wildlife.
The iconic arched bridge spans the chasm between the mainland and Cloghane Island, 45m above the sea. Completed in 2011 to replace the original 1910 structure, it's about 355m from the visitor centre along a paved path. Look down for seals hauled out on the rocks below.
Step inside the restored 1910 signal station on the island. Exhibits include the Engine Room, Marconi Radio Room, Keepers' Kitchen and Bedroom, the Fastnet Room, and an Underwater Room. The site housed Ireland's first radio beacon (1931) and a fog-signal station.
The centre above the car park holds a Fresnel Lens, Admiralty Charts, displays on Irish lighthouses, photographs of SW Ireland's lighthouses, a film about the signal station, and exhibits on local flora, fauna, birds and ancient sites.
Follow the headland paths down towards the bridge, taking in sweeping views of the Atlantic. The route includes the famous 99 Steps descending to the walkway. Flat accessible path runs as far as the bridge viewing platform. The climb back up is steep — allow extra time.
Grey and harbour seals are near-permanent on the rocks below the bridge. Seabird breeding season (April–July) brings gannets, kittiwakes, guillemots, choughs and puffins. Dolphins and porpoises pass year-round. Minke, fin and humpback whales are possible June–August, best seen from boat trips out of nearby harbours.
A playpark beside the visitor centre gives kids space to burn off energy before or after the walk. It sits along the route between the car park and the bridge path.
