Ireland's most south-westerly point — cross a dramatic arched footbridge 45m above the Atlantic to a historic signal station perched on the edge of Europe.
The iconic reinforced-concrete arch bridge spans the gap between the mainland and Cloghane Island, 45 metres above the churning Atlantic. Completed in 1911 and replaced in 2011, it's the highlight of any visit — look down for seals hauled out on the rocks below.
Once across the bridge, wander the restored lightkeeper's quarters: the Marconi radio room, engine room, keeper's kitchen and bedroom, plus the Fastnet Storm Room and Underwater Room. The station operated from 1909 until automation in 1993.
Descend the famous 99 Steps and follow paved cliffside paths to multiple viewing platforms. The walk back up is steep — it won't suit anyone with limited mobility. Allow 15 minutes down and rather more back up. Paths start closing from 4:30pm in summer.
Grey and harbour seals are near-permanent below the bridge. Seabirds (gannets, kittiwakes, puffins, choughs) crowd the cliffs from April to July. Dolphins and porpoises pass year-round; minke, fin and humpback whales are best spotted June–August.
The Mizen Information & eCentre in Goleen village (P81 VR99) offers free WiFi, hot desks, a meeting room, public toilets, a gift shop, and tourist information. Open daily 10am–6pm.
Barleycove Beach, a stunning Blue Flag beach, is just a 5-minute drive away. Brow Head — Ireland's actual southernmost point and a Star Wars filming location — is 15 minutes east, beyond Crookhaven.
