Kilmurvey is the only Blue Flag beach on Inis Mór, the largest Aran Island: a sheltered crescent of white sand and clear water lying in the shadow of the 3,000-year-old cliff-top fort of Dún Aonghasa.
A 15-minute walk from the sand leads up to Dún Aonghasa, the largest prehistoric stone fort of the Aran Islands, perched on a cliff with an 87-metre drop and no barrier at the edge. The visitor centre at Kilmurvey is the start of a 1 km route over rough rock — wear sturdy shoes.
The beach slopes gently into calm, clear water, so it suits children and easy paddling. Lifeguards patrol from June to September — check the notice board at the beach for daily patrol times.
Low sand dunes behind the beach shelter rare Red Data Book plants, and grey seals haul out on the rocks nearby at low tide — a favourite with children. Keep to the paths to protect the fragile dune flora.
The sheltered cove suits beginner kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding; surfing, snorkelling and fishing are also popular. The Wormhole (Poll na bPéist), a natural rectangular sea pool made famous by Red Bull Cliff Diving, lies nearby over slippery rock.
Cafés and craft shops cluster in the village, including the Kilmurvey Craft Village, with coffee, light lunches and locally made Aran knitwear, pottery and jewellery. Cycle or take the island minibus the 7 km from Kilronan.
