The highest point on Valentia Island delivers jaw-dropping 360° panoramas — from the Skelligs and Dingle Peninsula to the Kerry Mountains — and you can drive right to the summit.
Drive or walk to the top of Geokaun (266m) for wraparound views taking in the Skellig Islands, Blasket Islands, Dingle Peninsula, MacGillycuddy's Reeks, and the whole of Valentia Island. Two named lookouts — Shepherd's View and Miner's View — offer slightly different angles. It's a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point.
The 600ft (180m) sea cliffs on the northern face are the dramatic centrepiece. A flat, well-maintained 300m path leads from the lower car park to a secure viewing platform perched right above the Atlantic. Interpretive panels explain the geology, wildlife, and local myths.
A 1.5km waymarked loop starting from the Carraig na Circe car park. It takes 30–40 minutes at an easy pace, circling the mountain slopes with constant sea-and-island views. Best walked clockwise for the finest vistas. Sturdy trainers are fine; bring a windproof layer.
Picnic tables and seating are scattered across the mountain's car park levels — some in sheltered spots. Bring your own food and drink; there's no café on site. The nearest cafés and restaurants are in Knightstown (Royal Valentia Hotel) and Portmagee (The Moorings).
Around 50 information plaques are positioned along the pathways, covering Valentia's history, mythology, flora, and fauna. Keep an eye out for the wild mountain goats that roam the slopes — they're often seen near the cliffs.
