A third-generation dairy farm at Kilbeg on Valentia Island where the Daly family churns its own ice cream just metres from the milking parlour where it is served. It is the only artisan ice-cream producer in South Kerry.
All the ice cream and sorbet is made on site from the farm's own non-homogenised milk, with flavours like vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, rum and raisin, honeycomb and strawberry. Take a cone, tub, milkshake, float or American-style ice-cream soda in the comfy tea room or out on the deck with its views.
A guided visit beside the gift shop includes a short film on the farm and how the ice cream is made, plus an optional hands-on butter-making demonstration sampled on fresh brown bread. A complimentary scoop is included and visitors can watch production from pasteurisation to churning.
The bright craft shop sells handmade work from island and South Kerry makers along the Skellig Coast, from Skellig Soaps and Skellig Pottery to Kerry Woollen Mills, Mucros Weavers and original local art.
Beyond ice cream the tea room serves pancakes, made-to-order sundaes, muffins, home-made scones, teas, coffees and hot chocolate made with milk from the herd. A good wet-weather stop on Valentia.
The farm also offers carriage tours of Valentia Island, an easy way to see the island from the parlour base.
