A well-preserved Bronze Age ringfort on the Slea Head Drive where you can walk the ancient earthen ramparts, hear the fairy legends, and hand-feed free-roaming sheep, goats and donkeys.
The univallate rath (or lios) is enclosed by an earthen bank and fosse that rises 4.2m above the ditch, with a 3m-wide causewayed entrance facing due east. Inside you can trace the remains of 3-4 early huts and a souterrain (underground passage).
Sheep, lambs, goats, kids, horses and donkeys roam the site and are well used to visitors. Buy feed on site (rations provided) and hand-feed them — they are friendly, a little pushy, and happy to pose for photos.
Ringforts were once thought to be fairy homes imbued with druids' magic, linked to the Tuatha De Danann and Fir Bolg. Legend warns against cutting the whitethorn 'fairy tree', and says anyone inside the lios between 1am and 5am will not leave alive.
The fort sits on a gentle east-facing slope about 10km west of Dingle town in Kilvickadownig parish, with panoramic views over the Dingle Peninsula coastline — an easy, scenic stop on the famous Slea Head route.
