The town's defining feature: the River Inagh tumbles over an extensive ridge of rocks just below the main bridge. For the best views, walk through the stone archway beside Byrne's Inn to the riverside path, or head into the grounds of the Falls Hotel which overlooks the churning waters. The cascade's mist can soak bystanders on wet and windy days. The water also powers the Falls Hotel's hydroelectric turbine, making it a certified carbon-neutral property.
From the Falls Hotel car park, follow the riverside path upstream past intermediate cascades to the main waterfall. The route then loops through 50 acres of hotel woodlands before returning to town via narrow streets. Look for birdlife and reportedly otters along the river. The full loop takes about 35 minutes at a relaxed pace.
A self-guided signposted circuit tracing the town from its medieval origins through its 19th-century market boom. Passes St. Andrew's Church (now a cultural centre), the Courthouse Gallery, colourful Main Street shopfronts, and the 'An Gorta Mór' Famine Memorial near the old workhouse site.
