A rare polygonal shell keep built c.1209 by King John's orders to guard Dungarvan Harbour — one of the few Norman royal castles in Ireland, now a free OPW heritage site with a compelling exhibition tracing 800 years of military and policing history.
Access to the interior is by free guided tour (20–30 mins). Friendly guides lead you through the restored 18th-century barracks, an 8–10 minute audiovisual show, and a first-class exhibition covering Norman, British Army, Royal Irish Constabulary, and Garda Síochána eras.
Climb the renovated corner tower for panoramic views across Dungarvan Harbour and the Comeragh Mountains. This tower once displayed the heads of enemies; today it's a striking wedding venue. Steps are uneven — wear sturdy shoes.

A small but fascinating museum within the barracks tells the story of the castle's 20th-century role as a Garda Síochána headquarters (1922–1987), including its dramatic burning by Anti-Treaty IRA forces during the Civil War.
The castle sits right at the Dungarvan end of the 46km Waterford Greenway cycling and walking trail. It's a popular rest stop — park your bike outside and spend 30–60 minutes exploring before heading into town for food.
