A mixed Coillte woodland where the Colligan River threads a steep valley north of Dungarvan, with two waymarked loops, a riverside picnic site and free entry.
The easier of the two trails, a 3.5 km loop (about 1 hr 12-15 mins, 80 m ascent) following green arrows on forest road beside the river, then climbing gently into the woods and back. Dungarvan Harbour and Helvick Head appear in the distance.
A 6 km moderate loop (about 1 hr 40 mins, 100 m ascent) that takes in woodland on both sides of the Colligan River, sweeps around Greenane Hill and descends back to the car park.
A picnic site by the river has tables and benches. Sit quietly on one of the seats and watch dippers bobbing on the water, with a chance of a kingfisher; the Colligan is a salmon-spawning river with sea trout too.
Trees around the picnic site and along the walks carry identification plaques, among them Norway spruce, Western hemlock, Japanese larch, Sitka spruce, oak, ash, beech, maple and birch.
The upper stretches of both loops open onto the surrounding countryside and out towards Dungarvan Harbour and Helvick Head.
The river is fished for salmon and sea trout. Enquire locally about fishing permits and licences.
