A compact 35-hectare Coillte wood on a hill above Cork Harbour, laced with old carriage paths that climb to a hilltop gazebo, a Bronze Age cairn and wide harbour views.
Things to Do
Walk the Terrace Loop
The 2.2 km Terrace Loop circles the perimeter of the wood in about 50 minutes, showing off its position on the tip of the peninsula jutting into the harbour.
Find the Giant's Grave
On the summit sits a grave cairn from around 1500 BC, said to hold the giant Binne, who gives the wood its name.
Harbour and fort views
From the gazebo you look across Cork Harbour to Camden Fort Meagher, a coastal artillery fort; the surrounding water is a bird sanctuary (SPA), so bring binoculars.
Explore an old pleasure ground
Mature trees, flowering shrubs and ornamental species survive from the wood's days as a landed-gentry pleasure ground, sheltering plenty of woodland wildlife.
Drive on to Curraghbinny Pier
About 1 km past the entrance, the pier and a terrace of late 19th-century houses face Crosshaven across the Owenboy River; you can fish here (check locally for permits).
