A flat, traffic-free walking and cycling trail on a former railway line that links medieval Carlingford to Omeath along the shore of Carlingford Lough, with the route now continuing across the border to Newry.
The original 6.5-8km section runs from Carlingford Marina along the lough shore to Omeath, following an old railway trackbed with mild gradients. It suits walkers, runners, families with buggies and cyclists of all ages; access points are at Carlingford Marina and Omeath Pier.
Since summer 2025 the trail continues from Omeath to Victoria Lock and on to Newry's Albert Basin, around 19km from Carlingford. From Newry you can join the flat Portadown towpath for an even longer off-road ride.
On Yer Bike, at the trailhead beside the marina, rents hybrid bikes, kids' bikes, eBikes and child trailers. 2025 prices: adult hybrid from EUR 14 for 2 hours to EUR 28 for a full day; kids' bikes half price; eBikes EUR 48 per day. Helmets, locks and high-vis jackets are included.
Expect sweeping views across Carlingford Lough to the Mourne Mountains, with the Cooley Mountains rising behind. Along the way you pass old railway embankments and stone wishing wells where mountain streams meet the shore.
At the start of the trail, Carlingford's heritage includes the 13th-century King John's Castle, town walls and abbey, an easy add-on to a greenway outing.
Omeath, at the far end of the original section, has cafes, pubs, shops, public toilets and a children's playground, making it a handy turnaround point or lunch stop before heading back.
