A 12th-century Norman fortress dominating the shores of Carlingford Lough, where King John himself once stayed — now accessible by guided tour through one of Ireland's best-preserved medieval walled towns.
The only way inside is with a guide. Tours run daily at 2pm from April to October, departing from the Tourist Office on the seafront. The tour lasts about an hour and covers the castle's Norman origins, its role in defending the Pale, and the 2023 visit by US President Joe Biden.
Carlingford is one of Ireland's finest walled towns. A guided town tour (Mon–Fri at 11am) connects the castle with Taaffe's Castle, The Mint, the Tholsel gate, and the Dominican Friary — all within a short walk. Adults €10, children €4.
The castle's elevated position offers sweeping views across Carlingford Lough to the Mourne Mountains. The harbour below and Slieve Foye behind make it one of the most photogenic castle settings on Ireland's east coast.
Housed in a beautifully restored medieval Church of the Holy Trinity, the Heritage Centre is the hub for tours, local history exhibits, and visitor information. Open Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–16:00.
