An underground cavern on the shore of Carlingford Lough where Kevin Woods — Ireland's last Leprechaun Whisperer — tells the story of the country's surviving 236 leprechauns before leading you below the earth to their tunnels.
A one-hour visit, mostly indoors: a fully seated introduction to the story, then a walk one minute to the underground cavern beneath the folklore park. Booking is not necessary, but arrive at the scheduled times and phone ahead to be safe.
Kevin Woods, known locally as McCoillte, relates how a leprechaun suit, bones and four gold coins were found on Carlingford mountain, how he came to speak with the clan elder Carraig, and how the EU granted the leprechauns protection in 2009. The story has featured in 28 TV programmes worldwide.
The admission-free park beside the cavern has seating areas, a small playground and wide views of Carlingford Lough, the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Foye. Storyboards with miniature replicas, art installations, proposal stones and a fairy village explain the local myths.
Each child's ticket includes a model leprechaun of their choice to keep. Payment is by PayPal, cash or Revolut.
Groups of more than 10 — hen parties, families, schools, retirees or birthdays — can book times outside the usual weekend slots. Every year at 2pm on the Sunday in March when the clocks go forward, a ceramic leprechaun hunt with €2,000 hidden is held on the mountain.
