A gentle 4 km loop around Ardmore Head and Ram Head, threading cliff-top paths past a shipwreck, Early Christian ruins and one of Ireland's finest round towers — with breathtaking Atlantic views the whole way.
A well-signposted 3.9 km loop taking roughly an hour around Ardmore Head and Ram Head, following yellow-on-brown waymarkers on clifftop paths, laneways and quiet roads. Graded easy with only 40 m of ascent, but stay back from the cliff edge.
Look for the rusting wreck of the Samson, driven against the cliffs in a storm (all crew survived), and two coastal lookout posts — one a Napoleonic-era early-warning tower, the other used for observation during World War II.
Beside the path are the ruins of St Declan's Church and his holy well, crowned by late-medieval crosses hand-scored into the stone. It remains a pilgrimage site, especially on 24 July (Pattern Day).
As you approach the village you pass a 30 m round tower — among the best preserved in Ireland — and the ruined 12th-century cathedral with its Romanesque arch and ogham stones, plus the tiny 8th-century St Declan's Oratory.
The trailhead sits by Ardmore's long sandy beach, popular in summer for its safe bathing waters and an easy place to stroll or grab an ice cream before or after the walk.
The cliffs host rock pipits, kestrel and peregrine falcon, and roughly 113 species of wildflower including orchids and wild thyme. On clear days watch for dolphins, basking sharks or whales offshore.
The loop begins and ends at the Cliff House Hotel, whose Seafront Bar serves sandwiches, seafood and afternoon tea, alongside a Michelin-starred restaurant. Ardmore village has further cafés and pubs.
