A secluded sandy cove on Waterford's Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark — tucked at the mouth of the River Tay between grassy headlands, with acres of sand at low tide and crystal-clear waters for swimming at high tide.
A wide sandy beach that stretches far into the inlet at low tide. At high tide the water comes right up, creating ideal conditions for a swim on calm days. No lifeguard on duty — swim with caution and check current water quality before entering.
Low cliffs on the western side expose Ordovician slates and mudstones intruded by volcanic andesite. White quartz veins trace minor fault lines, and sedimentary features reveal ancient earthquakes. Explanatory signboards installed by the Geopark help decode the rocks.
On the inland side of the cove sits a historic lime kiln — a reminder of the days when coal and limestone were brought in by boat and processed here. A short stroll from the beach.
A short walk uphill brings you to the pretty village of Stradbally, with its medieval church ruin (the largest in rural Ireland), two pubs (one with a tea garden), a local shop with Post Office, and a butcher.
The Copper Coast Geopark has placed stone picnic seats and a table near the beach, plus interpretive signboards. Bring your own supplies and enjoy lunch with views across the cove.
From Stradbally village, follow waymarked Slí na Sláinte walking routes ranging from easy 40-minute strolls to longer 6 km loops through the area's distinctive sylvan and coastal scenery.
