A 5,800-year-old portal tomb standing alone on the bare limestone pavement of the Burren — Ireland's oldest dated megalithic monument and its most photographed.
The star attraction: a massive capstone (nearly 4m long, weighing ~5 tonnes) balanced on two upright portal stones. The tomb housed the remains of 33–36 people and was used continuously for 600 years. It is roped off but you can walk right up to it. Do not climb — the stone is fragile after nearly six millennia.
The limestone pavement surrounding the dolmen was scraped clean by ice sheets 16,000 years ago. Examine the clints (flat limestone blocks) and grikes (deep fissures formed by rainwater). Information boards explain the geology in detail — look for kamenitzas (small solution hollows) in the rock.
Beside the path to the dolmen lies a large boulder — a glacial erratic. Deposited by melting ice sheets at the end of the last Ice Age, it was ripped from the landscape and carried here. Similar erratics of granite and sandstone from Galway and east Clare are scattered throughout the Burren.
Poulnabrone is one of Ireland's most photogenic ancient sites, especially at dawn or dusk when the low sun catches the capstone and the limestone glows. The dolmen is silhouetted dramatically against the open sky. Midday in summer means sharing the frame with tour groups — come early or late for the best shots.
