A 1,000-year-old stone ringfort paired with Clare's only sheepdog demonstration — all run by the same family for five generations in a stunning Burren valley.
Watch border collies Lee, Lynn, Rose & Jess work sheep across the Burren landscape under whistle and voice commands. The shepherd demonstrates an incredible bond with the dogs, who herd with unwavering focus. Demos run daily at 11:10 & 14:10 from March to early November, in a covered viewing area — rain won't stop the show. Afterwards, the dogs bound over for belly rubs and selfies.
This exceptionally well-preserved circular stone fort dates to the 10th century and was inhabited until the late 1500s. Guided tours run daily at 10:15, 12:00, 13:30 and 14:15. Excavations have yielded jewellery, Venetian glass, Baltic amber, gaming pieces and the earliest pen found in the British Isles — evidence of a high-status, cultured settlement. A visitor-centre audio-visual presentation adds context.
After the demonstration, visitors can pet the collies — they love attention and affection. When lambs are small enough, you can also hold and cuddle them. It's an intergenerational hit: young and old alike enjoy the hands-on animal time.
The site sits in a hidden valley in the heart of the Burren. Maps of looped walks and trails in the surrounding Burren area are available from staff, and the short walks around the fort itself offer classic limestone-pavement views. Poulnabrone Dolmen, the iconic 5,000-year-old portal tomb, is right next door.
The on-site café serves artisan coffee, freshly baked scones, sandwiches, soups and sweet treats baked by Marie and her team. Try the award-winning Burren Gold cheese, produced in collaboration with Aillwee Cave. The lemon meringue pie comes highly recommended by visitors.
