A surreal karst landscape of limestone pavement, rare wildflowers, and ancient heritage — the Burren is unlike anywhere else in Ireland. Free to explore, with guided walks and a shuttle bus from the pretty village of Corofin.
Seven colour-coded trails range from a 30-minute loop (Knockaunroe Turlough, 1.3 km) to the challenging 7.5 km Mullaghmore Loop with 140 m of ascent. All start from the trailhead at Kenny's Cross/Gortlecka and traverse limestone pavement, hazel scrub, turloughs, and species-rich grasslands. The Nature Trail (1.5 km, ~40 min) is a good starter with views of Mullaghmore and Lough Gealáin.
NPWS guides lead free walks covering the Burren's flora, fauna, and geology. Walks are bookable in advance (max 12 people per group) — contact the Information Point by email or phone. Also look out for special events and the Fox Cubs Kids' Club during summer.
Three challenging routes — the Blue (7.5 km loop), Green (6.5 km return), and Red (6 km traverse) — take you around and over Mullaghmore. All pass Lough Gealáin, a glacial lake framed by limestone pavement, with the Red Route crossing Slieve Rua and descending an old famine road.
Also known as Eagle's Rock, this eastern Burren site offers three secluded trails (1–2.5 km). The Brown Route passes a 7th-century stone oratory, cave, and holy well linked to St. Colman MacDuagh, set among oak and hazel woodland with views of the dramatic cliff face.
The Burren is famous for its 'fertile rock': lime-loving and acid-loving plants grow side by side, and 23 of Ireland's 27 orchid species flourish here. Look for early purple orchid, bee orchid, and the rare sword-leaved helleborine. The mosaic of habitats also supports diverse birdlife and insects.
