A 5,000-year-old Neolithic passage tomb older than the pyramids, where a shaft of winter solstice sunlight still illuminates the inner chamber — all accessed from the superb Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre in the Boyne Valley.
From 19–23 December, the Visitor Centre opens early and anyone can gather outside Newgrange's entrance at dawn hoping to witness the sunlight entering the roof box. Getting inside the chamber is by lottery only (apply at solsticelottery.ie).
The main tour (March–November, ~3 hrs). Includes the self-guided visitor exhibition, a shuttle bus to Knowth for a guided tour of its megalithic art, then on to Newgrange where you step inside the narrow 19-metre passage into the cruciform chamber. The sheer age and engineering are extraordinary.
The only tour available November–February (~2 hrs). Covers the exhibition plus a guided visit to Newgrange with full chamber access. Knowth is closed during this period, making it a more focused but still deeply rewarding experience.
A state-of-the-art interactive exhibition exploring Neolithic life, the solar cycle, and the monument-building process. Includes a full-scale replica of the Newgrange chamber — especially useful if you have mobility concerns and can't access the real passage.
Part of the main Brú na Bóinne tour. Knowth contains two back-to-back passage tombs surrounded by 127 kerbstones and 18 smaller satellite tombs. It holds the greatest concentration of megalithic art in Western Europe — over 300 decorated stones.
Less visited than its famous neighbours, Dowth is accessed independently (not via the Visitor Centre). Drive directly via the N51 to walk around the exterior of this enormous mound with 115 kerbstones and two westward-facing tombs aligned to the winter solstice sunset.
The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre at Oldbridge Estate is just 3.8 km away. The Hill of Tara, seat of the High Kings, is 16.7 km away. Both make excellent half-day add-ons to a Brú na Bóinne visit.
