Walk inside a 5,200-year-old passage tomb at Newgrange — older than the pyramids — and stand amid the largest collection of megalithic art in Western Europe at this UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Boyne.
The third great passage tomb is accessible directly via the N51 (not through the visitor centre). You can't go inside, but you can walk around the mound, see its 115 kerbstones — at least 38 carved with megalithic art — and take in the rural views. At sunset on the winter solstice, light enters its western passage.
The flagship experience (Mar–early Nov). Includes the visitor centre exhibition plus guided tours of both Knowth and Newgrange, culminating in entry to the narrow passage and cruciform chamber inside Newgrange. The guide simulates the winter solstice light beam in total darkness — a genuinely stirring moment. Allow ~3 hours.
Limited one-per-day tour (Mar–early Nov). Explore the great mound housing two back-to-back passage tombs, surrounded by 18 satellite mounds. You can climb to the top for sweeping valley views. With over 300 decorated kerbstones, Knowth holds the greatest concentration of megalithic art in Western Europe. ~2 hours.
A fully interactive exhibition redesigned in 2019. Walk through immersive forest-scene installations, study Neolithic life and monument-building, see a full-scale replica of the Newgrange chamber, and watch films on ancient DNA discoveries. No pre-booking needed for the exhibition alone.
From early November to end of February, when Knowth is closed, this is the main tour. It pairs the exhibition with a guided visit to Newgrange and its chamber. Also available as a limited option in summer. ~2 hours.
