Lough Tay is the "Guinness Lake" — dark water over a white sand shore, framed by heather hills. You cannot reach its shore: it lies inside private Luggala Estate land, and the view from above is the whole experience.
The lake sits on private Luggala Estate land and there is no public access to the shore or the estate around it. The only permitted viewpoints are inside Ballinastoe Woods, above all the J.B. Malone Memorial on the Wicklow Way.
A forest loop from the Ballinastoe car parks leads down to the boardwalk and up to the memorial; allow 30-60 minutes. Stay alert for fast mountain bikers on the shared trails.
The pull-in at the Lough Tay viewing point on the R759 gives the classic view straight from the car, on the Sally Gap drive. It suits anyone who cannot walk in.
The Djouce Mountain hike is a moderate 6.5km round trip with views down onto the lake from above; the Luggala climb is steeper and harder.
Coillte's Ballinastoe trail centre has waymarked blue, red and black loops of 5km to 30km through forest with views over Lough Tay, plus bike hire and a picnic site.
Luggala Lodge, built in 1787 and later gothicised, was the home of Garech Browne, who founded Claddagh Records and drew poets, pipers and painters to this valley.
