Ireland's highest accessible waterfall thunders 121 metres down a rugged rock face at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains — a family-friendly destination for picnics, woodland walks, and sheer natural drama just 30 minutes from Dublin.
From the car park, a short paved 5–10 minute walk brings you to the base of the 121m cascade. You'll hear the roar before you see it. The viewing area is open and grassy, perfect for soaking up the spectacle. Stay off the slippery rocks at the base — climbing is strictly forbidden.
A short loop trail crosses the River Dargle and offers varied vantage points of the falls. The path takes around 30 minutes, is mostly flat with a few gentle inclines, and is suitable for all ages. Wear decent shoes — sections can be muddy after rain. Dogs on leads are welcome.
The expansive grassy area at the foot of the falls is made for picnics. Nine permanent BBQ stations are free to use on a first-come, first-served basis. You can bring your own BBQ (wheeled only — disposable BBQs are strictly prohibited) or buy charcoal at the on-site shop. Alcohol and loud music are not permitted.
A dedicated play area with climbing frames and sandpits keeps younger children entertained. The Sensory Trail encourages kids to explore nature through touch, sound, scent, and sight. Most paths are paved and pushchair-friendly.
The estate is home to Sika deer (introduced in 1858), native red squirrels, and birds including ravens, cuckoos, and willow warblers. Look out for the giant redwoods and 200-year-old oaks, beeches, and pines that line the drive in.
