Forth Mountain is a 235m quartzite ridge a short drive south-west of Wexford town, threaded with waymarked trails over 500-600 million-year-old rock, a 1798 battlefield and a flooded quarry lake.
The main loop starts at the Skeaterpark car park on the R733. The opening climb past Carrigatinna Rock is steep; the trail then divides, the right fork reaching Skeator Rock's coastal panorama. Allow about two hours.
A linear route between Ferrycarrig and Skeaterpark that follows the Wexfordmen's 1798 line past two castles, the lost town of Carrig and the Three Rocks battle, campsite and burial sites. Allow 3.5-4 hours and arrange a lift at the finish.
The star viewpoint on the Shelmaliere Commons side, looking out over Rosslare, Our Lady's Island, the Saltee Islands, Hook Head lighthouse, Dunmore East and the Waterford estuary.
A flat, multi-access 915m green loop (about 15 minutes) around the old quarry lake, with picnic tables and toilets beside the water and parking at Carrigfoyle Lake car park.
There is no cafe on the mountain, but Wexford town, a 10-minute drive away, is full of restaurants and pubs for a post-hike meal.
Johnstown Castle, with its gardens, museum and lake walks, and the Irish National Heritage Park are both around a 10-minute drive from the trailheads.
