Duckett's Grove is a hauntingly beautiful ruined Gothic Revival mansion with ornate towers and turrets, set around meticulously restored interconnecting walled gardens. It's one of Ireland's most photographed ruins — and completely free.
The burned-out shell of the 19th-century mansion is the star attraction. Designed by Thomas A. Cobden in castellated Gothic Revival style, its surviving towers, turrets, oriels and canopied statue niches create a dramatic silhouette. The tall octagonal viewing tower, clad in granite ashlar, is particularly magnificent.
Two interconnecting walled gardens have been beautifully restored. The Upper Garden features boxwood hedges, heritage shrub roses, Chinese and Japanese peonies, and exotic tender perennials. The Lower Garden — once the orchard — now grows figs, mulberries, pears, plums and historic Irish apple varieties like Irish Peach and Kerry Pippin.

Housed in a converted outbuilding in the courtyard, this café serves soups, sandwiches, burgers, brownies, muffins and quality coffee. Seating is available outside in the courtyard, with the ruined mansion as your backdrop. Jan–Mar open Friday–Sunday and Bank Holidays 9am–3pm; from 1 March open seven days a week.
NicAngels Candles occupies a craft unit in the courtyard, selling individually hand-marbled, fragrance-free Irish candles and hand-painted glass holders. The unit also stocks gift items from other local crafters. Open on selected days.
A rustic wooden playground sits within the pleasure grounds, designed to blend into its natural surroundings. It features an agility trail and a spider web climbing frame. Universally accessible.
Wander the restored paths and sunken stone bridge through wooded pleasure grounds, partly enclosed by a rare 'Carlow Fence' — vertical granite slab railings unique to the county. Plantings of oak, lime, hazel, spindle and laurel evoke the spirit of an 18th-century landscaped demesne.
