A 2.5-acre oasis of peace on the edge of Carlow Town — Ireland's first dedicated sensory gardens, where 16 themed spaces engage sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Part of the Delta Centre charity supporting adults with disabilities.
Follow the Celtic Walk, the central spine lined with yew trees and catmint buzzing with bees in summer. Each interconnected garden has its own character — from the Mediterranean Garden with herb-filled terracotta pots to the tranquil Willow Garden with living willow arches and pergolas. Every path is wheelchair accessible with crushed granite or paved surfaces.
The star attraction of the Five Senses Garden: a one-tonne sphere of Indian pink marble floating on a cushion of water, set on a limestone base with a blue glass surround. When the pump is off, visitors can step up and spin the massive ball by hand — a surprisingly easy and mesmerising experience.
Designed by Gordon Ledbetter, this garden features cascading waterfalls flowing into a pond stocked with koi and colourful water lilies. A wooden viewing platform cantilevers over the water, and you can walk beneath a raised waterfall to see 'Delta' stalactites and stalagmites up close.
Created by Chelsea gold medallist Mary Reynolds, this wild, romantic space was inspired by the Yeats poem. Native plants and 'weeds' are arranged with subtle artistry — look for the grass sculpture, tree carvings by Martin Monks, and a deep sense of Irish mythology throughout.
An A-frame structure bought at the Chelsea Flower Show now sits at the heart of the gardens. Climb the wooden stairs to the loft for a panoramic vantage point over all 2.5 acres, or walk beneath through the fernery and admire a limestone slab carved with a fern motif.
Half-moon shaped beds filled with different rose varieties, underplanted with thousands of daffodils for spring colour. The centrepiece is a striking stainless steel time-tide ring that marks the month at noon when sunlight passes through its eye.
A spacious 50+ seater café serving breakfast (Mon–Fri), freshly prepared lunches daily, and afternoon tea — all made with locally sourced produce. Expect daily-baked scones, unique flavoured breads, and sweet treats alongside good coffee. The garden centre and gift shop are right next door.
