A single granite slab weighing over 100 tonnes, balanced on upright stones in a quiet Carlow meadow for some 5,000 years — the heaviest dolmen capstone in Europe.
The whole visit is about one stone: a granite slab about 6.1m by 4.7m and up to 2m thick, generally estimated at over 100 tonnes. It rests on two tall portal stones and a door stone, sloping down to the west onto a low boulder.
A short unpaved path crosses the field from the roadside car park to the monument — five minutes each way. The ground is mostly flat but turns muddy after rain, so bring sturdy shoes.
Built in the early Neolithic, the tomb is thought to be 4,900-5,500 years old and has never been excavated. How the builders moved and raised the slab, without metal tools or machinery, is still debated.
Visit at dawn or dusk for low-angle light across the granite and the quietest conditions. Do not climb on the stones, go beneath the capstone, or move any smaller elements.
The monument sits about 3 km east of Carlow town, so combine it with Carlow Castle, Carlow County Museum or Duckett's Grove and its walled gardens.
