A 160-hectare Capability Brown landscape on the River Awbeg, where Georgian Doneraile Court looks out over old groves, cascades and free-roaming deer. The parklands are free to enter all year.
Half-hour guided tours run on the hour from 10:00 through the Georgian house, home to thirteen generations of the St Leger family. The refurbished ground floor holds period furnishings and art, including Frans Snyders' Battle of the Birds.
Red, fallow and sika deer graze the park, along with a herd of protected Kerry cattle. Look out too for red squirrels and otters along the Awbeg River.
Walled parkland of roughly 160 hectares with colour-coded routes to suit every fitness level; covering every trail adds up to about 10km, with shorter riverside and woodland loops.
The guided tour takes in the Pleasure Grounds, Parterre Gardens, Walled Gardens and the remains of the Pinery and American Gardens, planted in a naturalistic Capability Brown style.
Restored 18th-century water features remain the focus of the park: canals, cascades and fish ponds linked by elegant limestone bridges on the avenue up to the Court.
Sarah's Tearooms occupies the 19th-century kitchen wing, with a high ceiling and flagstone floor. It serves snacks, sandwiches and hot drinks, with courtyard seating in fine weather.
A playground inside the park has plenty of features, including a zip line, to burn off energy before the drive home.
