A Robinsonian-style historic estate where rare plant-hunter rhododendrons meet an 18th-century walled garden along the wooded banks of the River Awbeg — quietly reopened by the OPW in 2022 after a meticulous restoration.
The oldest part of the gardens, originally laid out in the 18th century. Clipped box ribbons, double herbaceous borders in soft shades, a curious viewing mount with a rustic summer house, and a lushly planted pond area framed by yew and beech hedges.
The River Awbeg flows through a limestone fault valley in a 'wild romantic glen' first enhanced in the 1770s. Today it's a jungle of bamboos, gunnera, skunk cabbage and Himalayan primulas. Limestone cliffs above create Mediterranean microclimates — follow the paths up to Hydrangea Rock.
The Woodlands Garden holds some of the earliest rhododendrons introduced to Ireland, grown from seed collected by Frank Kingdon-Ward on expeditions to Tibet, Burma, and Bhutan. Look for flowering dogwood (Cornus kousa), embothrium, eucryphia, and hoheria — best from April through June.

No café or tea/coffee facilities are available on site, so bring your own picnic. There are picnic areas where you can settle in among the historic grounds. Castletownroche village (about 3 km away) has pubs and shops for supplies.
