A 12th-century Norman castle on a rocky promontory above the River Awbeg, still a lived-in family home and hireable for weddings, parties and group stays. Its 50-acre estate is a protected nature reserve with a Sheela na Gig, a holy well and 2,500-year-old defences.
Patrick Nordstrom leads tours himself, talking visitors through Mesolithic settlement, the Bronze Age fortress of Dun Cruadha and the Roche lords who built here. Tours can be arranged for individuals and groups of all sizes.
The 17th-century Walled Garden still grows organic fruit and vegetables, with a sandpit, swings and slides for children. Beyond it are woodland paths, a maze cut through native trees, and riverside walking on the private stretch of the Awbeg.

A carved figure of a naked woman, possibly 8th-century, now set in the base of the Norman keep. Local tradition holds that women rubbed her to seek a fertility blessing, and the stone is visibly worn as a result.
Walk the avenue past the medieval outer defence wall, with sentry posts and 16th-century gun openings, and see the round 12th-century tower with its medieval chapel and garderobe. The estate has its own "Blarney Stone" — free to kiss.
Laser tag, bubble football, archery, gladiator jousting and team-building games are run on site by Adventure Park at Kartworld. Fishing, golf, mountain biking and hiking in the Ballyhoura hills are nearby.
The castle sleeps 23 in nine suites; the Courtyard adds a garden apartment and four dormitories sleeping 47. A simple campsite in the Nut Tree Field has showers and toilets in the Courtyard and a designated campfire.
