The tour also includes the Pleasure Grounds, the Parterre Gardens and the remains of the Pinery/Vinery and American Gardens, with charming plants and flowers. The house sits on a hill with views over the landscaped grounds.
The nineteenth-century kitchen wing houses the warm Doneraile Court tea rooms, with a high ceiling and flagstone floor, for snacks, sandwiches or something more substantial. Sit in the courtyard or by the stove.
Hourly guided tours (from 10:00) take in the refurbished ground floor of this Georgian house, home to the St Leger family for over 300 years, with collections of furnishings and art. Highlights include the dining room and the seventeenth-century painting Battle of the Birds by Frans Snyders.
Free to enter, the walled parkland holds limestone bridges leading to the house, cascades, fish ponds and trees hundreds of years old. Colour-coded walking routes let you pick one to suit your fitness.
Sika, red and fallow deer roam the estate alongside a protected herd of Kerry cattle, and you may spot a red squirrel or an otter along the Awbeg River. Bat boxes in the trees shelter several bat species.
A playground in Doneraile Park has a zip line and plenty of features for letting kids burn off energy. Note the playground and public toilets close at 16:30.
