About

A wooded hill rising above the M8 motorway near Fermoy, where a brisk forest walk leads past 3,000-year-old Bronze Age remains to a stone cross with sweeping 360° views across the Golden Vale.

Things to Do

The Corrin Trail

A waymarked 4.5 km loop (moderate, ~1.5 hrs) on quiet forest roads with a section of mature beech woodland on the northern side. Follow the blue arrows anticlockwise for the best views. The trail starts and finishes at the forest car park.

The Corrin Trail

Summit & Stone Cross

At 222 m, the summit holds Carn Thiernagh, a Bronze Age burial mound over 3,000 years old, encircled by Iron Age ring-fort remains. The large stone cross erected in 1933 is illuminated at night during Christmas and Easter — a familiar sight from the M8.

Stations of the Cross

Fourteen stone monuments line the forest road from the car park to the summit, depicting the final events of the Passion of Christ. A reflective, gently ascending walk even for those not on the main loop.

Wildlife Watching

Corrin is a stronghold for red squirrels, which move between the forest and feeders on the adjacent golf course. Fallow deer pass through regularly and buzzards are often seen circling over the summit.

Picnicking

Several picnic tables are provided in the car park area, making it an easy spot for an outdoor meal before or after a walk. Bring everything you need — there are no shops on site.

Fishing on the Blackwater

The renowned Blackwater River runs close by. Fishing is possible but requires a local permit — enquire in Fermoy before casting.
