About

A rugged 2,000-hectare wilderness of bog, mountain, and heath in the Twelve Bens range — free to enter, with four waymarked trails and sweeping Atlantic views from the summit of Diamond Hill.

Things to Do

Upper Diamond Hill (Red Route)

The park's signature hike: a 3.7 km loop climbing to the summit of Diamond Hill (442 m). Stone steps and boardwalks lead to panoramic views over the Twelve Bens, Kylemore Abbey, and the Atlantic. Allow about 2.5 hours return. Grade: strenuous.

Upper Diamond Hill (Red Route)

Lower Diamond Hill (Blue Route)

A gentler 3 km loop that climbs just 90 m to a viewpoint called Big Rock, with fine views of Diamond Hill and the ocean without the full summit effort. Mostly old bog road, steps, and boardwalk. Grade: moderate, about 1 hour.

Lower Diamond Hill (Blue Route)

Sruffaunboy Trail & Connemara Ponies

This easy 1.5 km loop (yellow route, ~30 min) passes the pony paddock where you can spot the park's herd of Connemara ponies. Views extend to Ballynakill Harbour and Tully Mountain. Part of this trail is wheelchair accessible.

Ellis Wood Nature Trail

A short, easy 0.5 km loop (green route, ~15 min) through native woodland beside a small waterfall. Ideal if you're short on time or want a gentler walk. Follows stone steps and boardwalks near the Visitor Centre.

Ellis Wood Nature Trail

Tree Trail & Poetry Trail

Two short self-guided routes near the Visitor Centre. The Tree Trail helps you identify native and introduced tree species, while the Poetry Trail pairs extracts of Irish poetry with the landscape. Pick up details at reception.

Wild Camping

No serviced campsite, but experienced multi-day hikers can wild-camp in remote areas outside the exclusion zone (several km from the Visitor Centre). Strict code applies: no fires, camp 400 m from roads/buildings, move every second night, take all waste home. Camper vans cannot stay overnight in the car park.
