About
Adare is a thatched-cottage village on the River Maigue, built around a 13th-century Norman castle and host of the 2027 Ryder Cup. It is the classic stop between Limerick and Kerry on the N21.
Things to Do
Tour Desmond Castle
Guided tours of the 13th-century Norman fortress leave by shuttle from the Heritage Centre. They run daily from 1 June to 30 September, departing at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 3.30pm; groups can be arranged outside those months on request.
Guided village walking tour
Local guides lead walks past the thatched cottages, medieval street layout, monastic sites and the River Maigue. For a self-guided option, the paved Village and Riverbank Walk takes about 30 minutes and is easy for all fitness levels.
Adare Heritage Centre
The centre is the practical hub: a historical exhibition on Adare from the Normans to the medieval abbeys, the Dovecote Restaurant, and shops including Adare Woollens and Black Abbey Crafts. It is open daily, 9am to 5pm.
Adare Village Park
A small public park in the heart of the village, once part of the Dunraven estate, with tree-lined paths, benches, flower beds, a thatched gazebo and the old Washing Pool.
Manor Fields and Playground
A 25-acre community amenity just off the Limerick/Kerry road, with a walking path, a remote-working hub and Espresso coffee shop. The award-winning inclusive playground is free and open seven days a week during daylight hours.
Eat and drink
The Heritage Centre café serves homemade breakfasts, light lunches, coffee and fresh bakes, with outdoor seating for visitors with dogs. Elsewhere the village has award-winning restaurants and bars serving food with regular live Irish music sessions.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: Adare Heritage Centre is open seven days a week, 9am to 5pm, year round. Desmond Castle tours operate daily only from 1 June to 30 September.
- Admission: Desmond Castle tours cost €10 for adults and €5 for children; the Heritage Centre is free to enter.
- Parking: Complimentary visitor parking sits at the rear of the Heritage Centre, including coach parking and accessible spaces close to the main entrance. The village is on the N21, about 20 minutes from Limerick City.
- Food: The Dovecote Restaurant at Adare Heritage Centre serves breakfasts, light lunches, coffee and home-baked desserts. The village itself has award-winning restaurants, bars serving food with live Irish music, and three supermarkets with off-licences.
