About

A 300-hectare former aristocratic estate where woodland trails, lakeside walks, and the haunting shell of a burnt-out Georgian mansion create one of Limerick's most atmospheric forest parks.

Things to Do

Walking Trails

Six waymarked trails suit all fitness levels. The accessible Lake Trail (1.1 km, 20 min) circles the man-made lake with views of the old house. The Curragh Trail (2.4 km, 30 min, easy) follows the original estate drives under shady tree canopy. The Glenisca Trail (3.6 km, 1 hr, moderate) ventures deeper into mature woodland, passing an old cave, limestone outcrops, and ancient yew trees.

Walking Trails

Cycling

The Lake, Curragh, and Glenisca trails are all multi-use, welcoming both walkers and leisure cyclists. Smooth forest roads and estate driveways make for relaxed two-wheeled exploring through the park's varied landscapes.

Arboretum & Pet Cemetery

The de Vere family planted a remarkable collection of trees and shrubs from around the world. Tucked within the arboretum is the old pet cemetery — a curious and poignant hidden gem.

The park is a Special Area of Conservation, home to the rare Lesser Horseshoe Bat and the elusive hawfinch. The lake attracts ducks and waterfowl, while native yew woodland restoration is underway.

Two extensive playgrounds keep children entertained — ideal for families combining a walk with playtime.

Orienteering

A permanent orienteering course is laid out across the park with controls spread throughout. Maps and answer sheets are available to download from the Coillte website. A Wheel-O (wheelchair-accessible orienteering) course is also available.

Picnics & BBQs

Plentiful picnic tables and BBQ stands are set up around the main car park area, with scenic spots near the lake.
