Things to Do

The Clew Bay cruise

A 90-minute round trip with no stop-offs around Clew Bay's islands, departing daily from 1 May to 31 October. Because Westport is a tidal harbour, sailing times vary each day, so check the online calendar. The modern ship, the Spiorad Naomh Phádraig, seats 50 in a heated lounge with panoramic windows and has an open upper deck.

Seal colony

The boat sails within metres of a colony of roughly 400 seals in their natural habitat. June to August is the time to see the year's new seal pups.

John Lennon's island

You pass right by the shores of Dorinish, the Clew Bay island John Lennon bought in 1967 for £1,700 as a planned hideaway retreat.

Croagh Patrick

See 'the Reek', Ireland's holy mountain where St Patrick is said to have fasted and prayed, from a panoramic sea-level angle.

Pirate queen and folklore

Guided commentary covers Grace O'Malley (Granuaile), who once ruled these waters, the 1894 Achill disaster in which over 30 islanders drowned, and the legend of the 365 islands, one for every day of the year.

Inishgort Lighthouse

The route passes Inishgort Lighthouse, where the bay opens out to Clare Island and the Atlantic horizon.
